What happened to chycho.com?

On 18 December 2009 I encountered some serious technical difficulties, which proved to be fatal.

More information on this later, for now, all I can promise is that my site will be back up some time in 2010 (looks more like 2011 or 2012). I will try and restore as much information as possible.

That being said, my first priority is to set up the two websites that will be dedicated to teaching The Language of Mathematics (now up) while helping to raise money for organizations that are trying to end prohibition (now up).

Hope to see everyone when all is well again.

Peace,

chycho

  6. Our politics might not coincide 100%, but your site is very valuable as pertains to your math tutorials.

Lots of luck and I hope everything gets back up AOK, if there's anything I can do to help...

  8. toronto_goat - my politics continuously morphs as I'm sure does most peoples (i hope so anyway), so not agreeing 100% is a great thing in my book. Thanks for the offer to help as well, it's much appreciated.

Neastimparatul - thanks for the compliments. I'll try and do my best to live up to it and feed the "addiction" :)

  9. Im realy serious Chycho! (I gues this is your real name) This is not something u do only to feed your need ofexpresing yourself, this actuly makes ppl think, come with new Ideas, undestand that math is all arownd us, and the only way of understand world is by math becvause math is in everithing : phisics, chimestry, biology, engeneering, astrology, even arts (cubic painters, perspective painting, music sequences) basicaly the Univers is full of it, and we can't have enough :D. We need ppl like u. Ppl arownd the world, watch more and more television, wich keeps the brain entertained, makes them happy, but keeps them from thinking. Math is one of the moust brain consuming Science. We need it!

AND TO ALL THAT VISIT THIS BLOG: PLEASE SHARE YOUR KNOLEDGE OF MATH, SO WE ALL BE A WORLD OF THINKES!!

P.S. I hope this is not too farfetched for you.

  11. Neastimparatul, what you are saying is not far-fetched, i agree with you.

It's my belief as well that if more people were fluent in mathematics then our world would be a much more beautiful and just place, which is why i plan of making math videos as long as i can.

Right now i'm about 5 to 10% through what i want to get done, which should give you a pretty good idea of how much more is to come :)

  12. that's grate news :) I cant w81 How is it going with the site?

    ReplyDelete
  13. It's going to take me while to set everything up. Expect the math sites to be up by summer 2010.

    ReplyDelete
  14. that's some time... but i can w8.

I have a question.. My Math teacher says there can not be a division to 0 onli 0+ wich gives +infinite, and div to 0- wich gives the -infinit. What do u say about that? And what about dividing infinite to 0? or Infinite to infinite? or 0 to 0?

    ReplyDelete
  15. See the following video regarding dividing by zero: The Language of Mathematics (5): Zero and Infinity

As for "infinite to 0? or Infinite to infinite? or 0 to 0?" ... you need calculus. It'll take me a few years to get to it.

    ReplyDelete
  16. It's because i've seen that I put the question, Im in 11th grade, and few mounts ago I learnt that division to 0 and other calculus is not posible, but its posible to divide by 0+, or 0- with will give the moust distant sides of number set (+ infinite and -infinite)

P.S. is 1 at the power of infinite = infinite or 1?

    ReplyDelete
  17. Tricky question. My reactionary response was that 1^infinity = 1 ... but that's not necessarily true.

1^infinity is defined as an 'indeterminate'. See the following link: Indeterminate form

However, I wasn't satisfied with the write up, so i asked one of the best math forums I've ever come across (Reddit). The question i asked was "Can someone explain in simple terms why 1^∞ is undefined (indeterminate)".

A lot of people have replied so far and it cleared things up for me. Have a read through the comments, they should answer your question.

  20. U know I kept thinking...What realy hapened with your site? Any virus or system failure?

    ReplyDelete
  21. To find out what happened to the site see the two links now added to the first paragraph of this post. They should explain what happened and how i tried to deal with it.

    The quick version is this:

My hosting account was hacked at DreamHost. By the time I was given access to the account, my parameters were changed and the site down. I’m not sure what was done, and I’m not sure what I was able to backup through ftp.

After a few days, DreamHost finally got back in touch with me to tell me that they could not restore the account to what it was prior to the hack, at which point I closed my account with them.

My site was running drupal, and, unfortunately, I did not set it up, so I am not familiar with it.

Right now I have two options, spend the time and money required to bring chycho.com back on line, or spend that time and money on setting up the two websites about math. I’m choosing the latter since I want to work on the solutions to our problems in society, math and ending prohibition.

Just to let everyone know straight up, right now I’m okay with my site being down. I was quite upset for the first few days. I am adjusting to it though, even though I do feel sad that a lot of information that was being used as reference by others (and myself) is now not available. I’m positive that once I have the math sites up, all the heartache would have been well worth it, at which point I will try and see what I did end up saving from my site.

    That’s the quickie.

  22. Hey Chycho, I want you to know that all your efforts in making the math videos is really appreciated. Having gone through them myself, I'm now going through them with my 8 year old son who says he wishes he had a teacher like you! So sad to hear about the loss of Chycho.com. Good luck and peace, The Geek.

  23. WOW u went through a lot!! That must've been depresing. I admire your determination of going further and fighting for your cause, u reqaly are a good example :) I can not imagine why someone with hacking ability (for wich u need programing, wich is binary math)would do this... I mean they should like math if they know how to hack, so whata the purpose? Invie? Revange(for what???)? For fun??... Was he payed for it by a math hater, or hater of you , or Damn...

All i can say is: May u live for ever in the hearts of every viewer of your videos and everyone that saw you and had a chance to talk to you!

I hope u'll finish acomplish everything u desire. U are realy a god teacher and I realy apreciate u for the knoledge u shared.

    THANK YOU!

  24. Thanks Geek, hopefully, by the time your son gets to high school, i'll have all of high school math covered with the videos :)

  25. hay Chycho I've been thinking...do u continue in doing videos now that the site is down?

    ReplyDelete
  26. Neastimparatul,

I will be back making videos as soon as the weather improves, irrelevant if the site is back up or not. It rains a lot in Vancouver in the Fall and Winter so the walls are too wet for me to do any math.

My math videos are a seasonal thing :)

    ReplyDelete
  27. Well that will give me some time to finish the videos I took from the torrents site :)

  28. Hey Chycho! I discovered your blog through disinfo.com and have always been very grateful for the information you've shared. I'm an itenerant drupal developer and may be able to help you get some stuff back and get you setup again.

email me ryan at design 2 adopt dot com if you're interested in pursuing that.

  29. Hi malaclypse,

Your offer is much appreciated. If possible, I'd like to take a rain-check. Right now I'm going to try and get the math sites up and once that's done, I'll see what needs to be done about chycho.com ... not sure when that will be, but if it's okay and i still need the help, I may hit you up.

As for disinfo, what a great site.

    thanks again,

    chycho

  33. akhilesh,

As far as i see it, it's always a good time to try and learn something that you had problems with in the past. Even if you fail, you would have learned more than you knew before.

And always remember that sometimes when we spend the time to relearn something from our past, we end up understanding it much better the second time around, either because we are older, more mature, or just because we have filled in the gaps that we may have needed.

For me, mathematics really began to make sense in my 30's when i started to review old material. I was amazed what i didn't know and how much more sense everything made. I remember having multiple WOW moments on the simplest concepts. It was amazing and I can honestly say that spending the time to relearn high school math dramatically improved my life.

  34. I KNEW there was a reason why i saved so many of your excellent pages and articles as pdf files. I'm so glad i did. Please keep up the good work.
    Thanks so much.

  38. Hey, Chycho:

Thought it was time I write to express my condolences on the loss of your brilliant website. But also to say welcome to the world of blogspotters. I'm personally enjoying very much the freedom from the maintenance work of my now defunct .com site, and I suspect this tragedy has provided you a mental vacation you might have needed but wouldn't have thought to give yourself.

It's clear from your math videos that you are a born teacher!

    Best of luck to you.

    ReplyDelete
  39. Good to hear from you Corinne, and thank you for the greeting :)

Tell you the truth, you are 100% correct. The break from maintaining and posting on the site was and continues to be amazing. I had no idea that I needed a break until it was forced on me, and WOW!

I do plan on building things up to the same pace again, focusing on the math aspect this time, but it is very nice to have the time to catch-up with other things. The "mental vacation" has been a delight.

I will definitely be following your blog more closely now as well, so please keep up the great work.

    Peace,

    chycho

    1. Hi Miguel, thank you for the comment and my apologies about Video #15. I had edited the video to a music track that was flagged by youtube for infringing on copyrights, so they muted it, even though it was just a small sample. I loaded this up a long time ago before this corporate take-over of the internet became the norm.

To make the video available, What I did was ask some amazing guys from Chile if I could use their music and they said gladly. So during the re-edit for my math site I loaded it up with their track and it's available on my "Math in Real Life" youtube channel. You can find the video here: https://youtu.be/iL9tDoXNEdg

The group from Chile is called "Horeja". If you love heavy music then I hope you love their sound, if not, just hang tight, it's a short segment.

And for sure let me know if you need any help.

      Peace.
