20 Steps to Reading a Textbook
- Familiarize yourself with the Table of Contents.
- Use the Index to navigate the book.
- Scan Footnotes.
- Read the Introduction/Preface/Conclusion.
- Know what's in the Appendix.
- Read the Titles/Subtitles/Headers.
- Read and learn from the Examples.
- Read/understand Bold/Italic/Highlighted text.
- Spend time understanding graphics/visuals.
- Make note of formulas that are numbered.
- Check your work as you do it (one at a time).
- Read/review everything in the side columns.
- Always read first & last paragraphs of sections.
- Read first sentence of every paragraph.
- Read last/middle sentences of large paragraphs.
- Read the text before and after a formula.
- Read new concepts in detail, i.e., take your time.
- Read introduction and conclusion of chapters.
